19th century Flemish school, Still life with a bouquet of pe - Lot 24
19th century Flemish school, Still life with a bouquet of peonies, roses and carnations, oil on panel, later gilded frame.
Painted against a dark background, this painting depicts a dense bouquet of flowers - peonies, roses, carnations and foliage - arranged in a vertical composition typical of the Nordic tradition of the 19th century.
The pronounced chiaroscuro and petal rendering recall the late influence of 17th-century Flemish painting, revisited by studio artists and followers active in the 19th century. The fine, meticulous workmanship suggests a workshop of decorative quality.
