Mario Botta (b. 1943) for Artemide - "Shogun" floor lamp (also known as Shogun Terra)
Lacquered steel and micro-perforated sheet metal, tubular base
Italy, circa 1986 1995
An emblematic floor lamp in Artemide's Shogun collection, this model features a cylindrical shaft punctuated by black and white stripes, Mario Botta's graphic signature.
The lampshade is composed of two semi-cylindrical visors in micro-perforated sheet metal, mounted in opposition and adjustable, allowing precise modulation of light distribution between direct and indirect lighting.
This architectural construction, both rigorous and expressive, is a perfect illustration of the post-modernist vocabulary developed by Mario Botta in the 1980s, in which light becomes a structuring element of space, treated as a volume in its own right.
The strong contrast between the metal surfaces, the repetition of the striped patterns and the almost monumental legibility of the form bring this floor lamp closer to a luminous totem pole, at the frontier between design and architecture.
Published by Artemide from the mid-1980s onwards, the Shogun Terra has established itself as one of the great classics of contemporary Italian design, and can be found today in numerous public and private collections.
Condition: good overall condition with traces of use and visible micro-marks, consistent with age and use.
Edition: original Artemide production from the period in question
