Marcel Breuer (1902 1981) "Wassily" (model B3), Gavina edition, Italy, circa 1960 1968; chrome-plated tubular steel frame, leather straps.
A Bauhaus icon designed in 1925-1927, the "Wassily" chair (B3) was reissued in Italy in the 1960s by Dino Gavina, before being taken over by Knoll. Very rare. The term "first edition" is to be understood here as the first Italian generation (Gavina), as distinct from the very first pre-war productions (Standard-Möbel/Thonet). Older Gavina models generally feature a chromed steel frame with black or brown leather straps, sometimes marked on the underside of the seat ("Gavina", "Made in Italy"). Authentication is ideally based on markings, type of screws and sewing details, period glides.
