Zanotta "Onda" model, sofa, Italy, second half 1980s. Design attributed to De Pas, D'Urbino & Lomazzi. Sofa with a characteristic undulating silhouette, the backrest forming a continuous wave held in place by an outer frame of chromed steel tubing, punctuated by horizontal crosspieces. Exposed metal structure follows the line of the backrest. Seat and backrest upholstered in black leather cushions, resting on a metal base. Zanotta edition, attested by the original labels and documents (leather samples, manuals). The external steel frame, deliberately visible, plays a structural as well as an aesthetic role: it outlines the object in space, underlining the tension between supple seating and industrial rigor. This dialogue between comfort and formal radicalism is emblematic of the research carried out in Italy at the end of the twentieth century, particularly by designers close to radical architecture and experimental design.
