Gustave Nellens (1907-1971), director of the Casino de Knokke and a great supporter of artists active in Belgium, wrote the texts for Fleurs de trottoir, published shortly after his death. The book is the result of their collaboration: twenty poems by Nellens inspired by the women of the street, set to pictures by Labisse, who created a suite of original lithographs for the edition, playing on eroticism, allegory and graphic stylization.
