Indo-Persian miniatures Court scenes and equestrian processi - Lot 114
Indo-Persian miniatures Court scenes and equestrian procession, one with Hafez manuscript leaflet on reverse
Two gouaches on paper depicting lively scenes in the Indo-Persian style:
one depicting a court scene with figures, musician and servants under a pavilion, accompanied by inscriptions in Persian script in the composition and featuring a manuscript leaflet in Nastaliq script on the reverse,
The other depicts a procession with horsemen and figures in traditional dress in front of a rampart.
Painted frames with stylized floral decoration. Homogeneous set, probably from late Indo-Persian production.
The manuscript leaf on the reverse corresponds to a Persian poetic text written in the Nastaliq calligraphic style, and contains the famous Ghazal n°3 by Hafez of Shiraz (14th? century), whose incipit reads:
"Agar an Turk-i Shirazi be dast arad dil-i ma ra / Be khal-i hinduyash bakhsham Samarqand o Bukhara ra".
This emblematic poem of Persian literature evokes the idealized beauty of the "belle of Shiraz" and absolute abandonment in love, going so far as to symbolically offer up Samarkand and Bukhara for a single mole. It is also associated with a famous anecdote pitting Hafez against the conqueror Tamerlane.
Mounted under glass in modern frames.
Dimensions: approx. 18 x 14 cm each.
