Bodo Rütten (b. 1944) After Caspar David Friedrich (1774-184 - Lot 20
Bodo Rütten (b. 1944) After Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), The Sea of Ice / Shipwreck of Hope, 2004 Painted copy of Caspar David Friedrich's The Sea of Ice, also known as The Shipwreck of Hope (1823-1824). Painted by Bodo Rütten in June 2004. Presented in a frame. Dimensions of frame: 135.5 x 105 cm. Born in 1944, Bodo Rütten is a German painter associated with magic realism, whose work explores the transience and absurdity of everyday life through landscapes and still lifes with surrealist overtones. The Sea of Ice (Das Eismeer) is a painting by Caspar David Friedrich from 1823-1824, now in the Kunsthalle Hamburg. The work depicts a frozen sea of sharp ice blocks, from which emerges the stern of an ice-bound ship, inspired by the HMS Griper on William Edward Parry's Arctic expedition. Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), a major figure of German Romanticism, is famous for his grandiose landscapes that seek to convey the sublime and the smallness of man in the face of nature.
