After Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708 1787) The Penitent Magdal - Lot 28
After Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (1708 1787) The Penitent Magdalene Oil on canvas depicting Mary Magdalene in meditation, leaning close to a book and a skull (memento mori), in a dark landscape. This composition faithfully reproduces a model by the Italian painter Pompeo Batoni, a version of which, painted around 1742, was among the works conserved at Dresden's Gemäldegalerie. The original painting was destroyed during the bombardment of Dresden between February 13 and 15, 1945, during which a large part of the collection was wiped out. The work is now considered lost. Against this backdrop, early copies such as this one provide valuable evidence of the distribution and memory of this lost composition. Copy work from the second half of the 19th century (circa 1850-1880), probably produced in an academic setting. Beautifully executed, particularly in the rendering of flesh and drapery. Presented in a large wood and gilded stucco frame decorated with foliage. Old label mentioning Pompe Batoni . Please read the sales information available at Drouot (Internal ref.: 0427).
