Delicate composition in autumnal tones, typical of small-format landscape work. Signed lower right. On reverse: handwritten inscription "T.P. Derocher 1932", "Liège", and subject "Vallée de l'Ourthe (Math. de Hamoir)". Wood frame with molded profile. Dimensions: 22.5 x 28 cm (frame). Biography: Théophile-Pierre-Odon Deroché (1868-1943), born in Marche-en-Famenne and based in Liège, led a double life as a field engineer and artist. Sent to the Congo in 1893 to build the railroad, he lived through trying episodes that nourished his vision and his imagination. This experience gave rise to a number of "carnets de route", a sensitive record of his travels and daily life. Back in Belgium, he devoted himself to intimate landscape painting, often in small format, as well as to modeling and sculpture. A discreet artist, he exhibited in Liège in 1939 and left a rare body of work, combining colonial memory and attachment to the local landscape.
