Tomi Ungerer (1931-2019) Fornicon - Lot 70
Tomi Ungerer (1931-2019) Fornicon First edition published in 1969 by Rhinocéros Press. Set comprising 54 plates, 7 millimeter papers and a lithograph entitled For Arlene. Box present but damaged. Visible soiling. A SCANDALOUS AND WATCHFUL MASTERPIECE BY TOMI UNGERER Published in 1969 by Rhinoceros Press in New York, Fornicon is Tomi Ungerer's most subversive and monumental graphic work. Both a ferocious satire of consumer society and a masterpiece of erotic art, this portfolio depicts the mechanical dehumanization of human relationships through surgically precise diagrams. On its release, the graphic violence of the work triggered a resounding scandal in puritanical America. His radical anti-conformism and political commitments (notably his anti-Vietnam War posters) attracted the attention of the American authorities. The FBI placed the artist under surveillance and questioned him on several occasions, considering his work a subversive threat. Boycotted by booksellers, censored and banished from the children's publishing world that had so glorified him, Ungerer saw his books withdrawn from public libraries and was forced into exile following this publication. Published as a deluxe portfolio in a very limited edition to escape mass censorship, this historic collection - a blend of underground art and state repression - has now become the absolute Holy Grail of twentieth-century collectors.
