BUFFALO HELMET MASK - Grasslands, Cameroon - Bamileke - Lot 2
BUFFALO HELMET MASK - Grasslands, Cameroon - Bamileke Mid-20th century. Wood, dark, matte patina that is crusty in places. Dimensions: 68 cm. A headdress mask carved from dense wood depicting a stylized wild buffalo head, with a muzzle featuring wide nostrils surmounting an open jaw revealing carved teeth. The bridge of the nose is adorned with geometric herringbone patterns incised into the wood. The large, carved almond-shaped eyes and two large, powerful horns with ringed bases curve inward. This type of headdress mask was worn atop the head by a dancer whose body was concealed beneath long costumes.
