ANTILOPE MASK - Burkina Faso - Bobo - Lot 7
ANTILOPE MASK - Burkina Faso - Bobo First half of the 20th century. Wood, dark patina. Dimensions: 63 cm. A mask with a face elongated downward, ending in a circular or pointed muzzle, typical of the Bobo people’s zoomorphic statuary. The eyes, carved as deep, round holes, are positioned on the sides of the head. Two small oval ears are carved just below the base of the horns. The horns are carved with very imposing, regular horizontal grooves and rise straight upward, barely curving backward, like those of the hippotrague (the large savanna antelope). These masks embody the protective spirits of the bush, Do. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art. Internal ref.: 274
