ELU MASK, OGONI, NIGERIA Wood, kaolin, black ochre. - Lot 35
ELU MASK, OGONI, NIGERIA Wood, kaolin, black ochre. Dimensions: 31 cm Elu masks (meaning “spirit”), worn by young men, were notable for the joyful and dynamic physical feats of their wearers. Their performances are associated with harvests, fertility, and, more recently, Christmas. These Ogoni masks are painted with white ochre (kaolin) and black ochre to outline the eyebrows, eyes, and mouth, often adorned with a double-loop motif at the corners of the mouth. The contrast between white and black brings the face to life. In good overall condition, with a small chip on the left horn. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art.
