MASK - Ivory Coast - Dan - Lot 42
MASK - Ivory Coast - Dan First half of the 20th century. Wood, dark patina, raffia. Dimensions: 26 cm According to the classification by Fischer and Hans Himmelheber, there are eleven categories of masks to which social, political, and religious roles can be attributed, and these roles evolve over time. Masks are spirits that inhabit the forest and wish to take part in human life and society. These spirits are also ancestors. Their stylistic characteristics include an oval face, a high, domed forehead, prominent eyes, a straight, slender nose, a slightly protruding, diamond-shaped mouth, and a black, polished patina. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art.
