STATUETTE OF A SEATED OBA - Nigeria - Yoruba - Lot 88
STATUETTE OF A SEATED OBA - Nigeria - Yoruba Mid-20th century. Copper alloy (bronze/brass), dark brown patina. Dimensions: 20 cm. Bronze statuette depicting a high-ranking figure (probably an Oba) seated on a ceremonial throne adorned with geometric motifs. He holds a traditional game board (awalé?) in front of him. The figure is depicted with the regalia of the Benin kingdom: a high necklace encircling the neck and an elaborate headdress, typical of court attire. The face is characterized by large almond-shaped eyes with distinct pupils and a broad nose. The classical art of Benin (15th–19th centuries) is famous for its ritual masterpieces; however, Nigerian bronze casters continued throughout the 20th century to cast depictions of court life for Western collectors. Condition: Dark patina, oxidation. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art. Internal ref.: 173
