GRAIN STORAGE HOUSE DOOR - Mali - Dogon - Lot 179
GRAIN STORAGE HOUSE DOOR - Mali - Dogon Late 19th – early 20th century. Wood, metal. Dimensions: 109 x 53 cm. A grain granary door commonly found in this region of West Africa. Granaries play a crucial role in the survival of villages in savanna areas. The door consists of two panels joined by metal braces. The surface of the wood is carved with parallel lines forming large interlocking diamonds, a classic motif that refers to cultivated fields or to the Dogon cosmogony of the creation of the world by Amma. The wooden lock attached to the left side secures the notched bolt. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art. Internal ref.: 1220
