TWO CEREMONIAL APRONS - Mandara Mountains Region, Cameroon - Lot 219
TWO CEREMONIAL APRONS - Mandara Mountains Region, Cameroon Mid-20th century. Multicolored beads (blue, red, yellow ochre, white, navy blue), cowrie shells, threads, and plant-fiber cords. Dimensions: L. 97 and 110 cm Set consisting of two shaped apron-belts, entirely woven from beads in a geometric pattern composed of a dense network of diamond-shaped motifs (alternating diamond structures). The lower edge of each apron is richly adorned with a fringe of cowrie shells suspended by braided fiber cords. Traditionally, the creation of these meticulous adornments signified social status. The diamond-shaped motifs symbolize fertility. The cowrie shells, an ancient form of currency, signify wealth. Condition: Good condition with signs of use. The colors of the beads remain very vibrant. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art. Internal ref.:
