IKENGA STATUE - Nigeria - Igbo - Lot 75
IKENGA STATUE - Nigeria - Igbo First half of the 20th century. Wood covered with a dark, very dense, grainy, and dried-out patina, mixed with residues of ritual materials. Traces of pigment paint. Dimensions: H. 49 cm. An anthropomorphic figure depicted seated on a traditional stool and holding a tray with long handles in both hands. Above its head, on this horizontal tray, rest massive, curved horns. Small bells or carved elements are suspended from the tray. This statue is believed to represent a spiritual altar of strength and success, as conceived in Igbo culture. Success based on effort and hard work. Given the size of the object, it is likely a communal ikenga. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art. Internal ref.: 256
